Is it only me or does anyone else have a problem with this. It seems that when striking the ball with an iron, it stings my hands so much it causes real pain/numbness! I was thinking of wearing 2 gloves but I may just be using a tighter grip than I should. Any thoughts?

Slow Down You Move Too Fast - Golf Swing Basics

Kenh Jones asked:

If you are a beginner golfer then you know that to make the ball go a long way you need to hit the ball hard and fast, Right?? Well yes and no.

The golf swing basics involve a number of aspects that you need to get right. The speed of your golf club head is only one of these aspects.

There are about a half dozen elements in the basics of a good golf swing and while every one will do them slightly differently, sticking to the golf swing basics will help prevent the beginner golfer from thinking too hard about their golf swing.

The Basics of the Golf Swing

The first part of your golf swing is the mental part. Many would say that this is where most games are won and lost on the golf course. For the starter golfer you never want to look stupid on the first tee when you thwack your ball into the trees or the nearest lake. You need to blank out all thoughts and surroundings when addressing the golf ball and just think about where you plan the ball to go. Do not give any thought time to how you will feel if you miss. Just focus on your shot.

One of the pressurizing aspects of taking a golf shot is that you are always being watched. You have your opponents and maybe the following group watching your every move. You must ignore all of this outside attention and just work through your shot. Make it clear what you are going to do and then do it.

Because you are a beginner it will not always work but that is not the issue. If you are in charge mentally then you will eventually get more right than you will wrong.

Controlling Your Swing Speed for More Accuracy

This is the single simple most important golf tip that you can adopt to improve you accuracy and distance. Control your golf club. If you are swinging your golf club so fast that it is not under full control then you will never get the distance you need. Swing your club as fast as you can while still being in control of the moment of contact. By slowing your club down by up to 30% speed you will actually increase your distance. This is as a result of better contact with the sweet spot of the golf club face.

Whether you are a hooker or a swinger of the golf ball this slowing down of the golf club will ensure better distance and very quickly reduce your banana golf shots. Your swing technique will improve as you take control of the pace of your golf swing.

Another mistake with the speed of your swing is to try and speed up in the last 18 inches before contact with the golf ball. By doing this you will again lose the straight shooting you are looking for. You must make your swing smooth on the backswing and smooth and controlled on the downswing. The club head will naturally gain momentum on the way down. There is no need to force it.

Once you know you have control of the clubhead then you can consider trying to add more speed to your swing. But do not think about the speed when you are hitting the ball. Think about being in control of your swing

Gimpy asked:

I had my second knee surgery almost 8 weeks ago. Today was the first time I have tried to play golf since September 15th because of pain and recovery. My issue is I can’t remember how to swing the club anymore. I know what to do in my mind, but my body just isn’t working the way I am thinking it should. I am most frustrated because after my ACL surgery the first time I picked a club up and played I shot a 76. What can I do to get back to my old form?

Andrew S asked:

On the follow through, I lose my posture. When I swing the club in my right hand and use my left hand to keep my left hip pushed in - I make a great pivot. But, with two hands on the club, I lose the bend in my hip. I do have a chronic bad back for 25 years. But, I figure there must be a set up tip or some other tip to help. Your thoughts?

The Key To Better Golfing Is To Seek Golf Swing Training

Sunday, June 8th, 2008
MIKE SELVON asked:

Anyone who is even a little bit familiar with the game of golf knows that perfecting its swing is one of the most important things that they can do to improve their game and lower their score. These days, with the popularity of this sport at an all time high all around the world, golf swing training is something that more people are seeking out.

One of the simplest approaches to golf swing improvement is to use a special golf training club. This type of club can help to increase the golf swing speed and the power behind the swing as well. If you really want to improve your golf swing, then you cannot really find a training device that is more specific or effective.

It has been proven over the course of many years that the best way to undertake golf swing training is to use a golf swing trainer. This is a club that is specially weighted. The additional weight of this golf trainer provides resistance and if you repeatedly practice your swing with this resistance, then you have the potential to quickly improve your overall swing.

The most apparent and direct result of using a golf training club correctly is an increase in driving distance that a golfer will notice almost immediately. This is because the golfer is training the muscles that he uses during a swing to work against the resistance of the weighted club, which provides an element of strength training. When the golfer picks up a standard club, his muscles will have been readied to hit the ball harder than ever before because of this strength training.

Training to improve the swing is primarily a function of repetition combined with muscle training. It is helpful to go through the complete range of motions for a standard swing, or an even bigger range of movement if possible, with as many repetitions as possible.

However, it is more important to make sure that you are also practicing the correct stance during this training. Using a golf training club, or any other type of golf training aid, without taking the time to learn how to use them correctly will only result in frustration and disappointment.

Practicing a swing that has poor form will not improve your game. If you are not sure whether or not you have proper form, then you should seek out the help of professional golf swing trainers.

Another way that you can benefit from golf swing training is in improving your backswing and your follow through. This is also accomplished with the help of a good quality golf swing trainer club and can result in a great deal more power at the point of impact on the ball. In addition to using a golf trainer club, it is also a good idea to do other stretching and strengthening exercises that will help support your entire frame and make you stronger overall and therefore a better golfer.
