Golf Swing

A golf pro told me to swing straight back and then come in trying to hit the ball outward. I am talking about the trick with the arrows: where there is an arrow pointing back along the target line and then an arrow coming in aiming slightly right of the target line. These arrows never really worked for me. I definetely see why you must swing inside so that you don’t slice it but if i try to hard i end up totally pushing the ball to the right. if i don’t try at all it slices. how do i find the middle ground?

Ive been playing golf for about 5 years and just read this. I always thought with irons you hit more on the upward part of your swing. Also, should I be lifting divots when I’m hitting with my irons on the fairway? Thanks!
